Thompson crowned Australian Darts Iso Challenge champion

Justin Thompson was crowned the winner of the first Australian Darts Iso Challenge as the Victorian defeated Peter Machin 5-4 in Monday night’s final.

To progress through to the decider, the 46-year-old Machin fought back from a 1-4 deficit to defeat the competition leader Mal Cuming 5-4 – finishing with 56 in three darts to clinch the first Semi Final in the ninth leg.

In the second Semi Final, Thompson defeated South Australian Aaron Morrison 5-4. The 51-year-old hit a 12-dart ninth leg to seal the win and set up the competition’s climax.

In the decider, Thompson shot out to a 2-0 lead and although Machin fought back to level proceedings, the South Australian allowed his opponent to retake control.

Thompson found some magic when it mattered most – finishing with 151 in three darts to seal the victory in the ninth leg – and was crowned the first Australian Darts Iso Challenge champion.

“It was a bit of a struggle [in the final], but you just have to keep believing in what you can do and hopefully they come good for you.” Thompson told Darts Australia President Kelvin James in a post match interview.

“We both had bad darts, but we also had some really good darts at right times, it’s good to win the first one [Iso Challenge]. Peter’s a great opponent, a good thrower and a real credit to him.”

“Thank you to Kelvin and the sponsors for the tournament, to be able to play darts while we’re isolated is just awesome, and thanks that I could be apart of it.” Thompson added.
